Some Mumps in the Vaccination Road

According to studies conducted by the Harvard T. Chan School of Public Health, mumps is making a come-back among older, vaccinated individuals. The primary explanation for their finding is that the vaccination may produce immunity, but it wanes over time. Thus, they are pushing for a third dose of the vaccine to be administered at age 18 to prevent the incidence of this viral infection from increasing. This is informed by their estimates that nearly 25% of people vaccinated with the MMR vaccine lose immunity in about 8 years, with little reason to believe that new strains of this particular paramyxovirus are causing the breach of vaccine-bolstered immune systems. The disease it produces can be severe, resulting in orchitis, deafness, or even meningitis. Furthermore, older populations are far more susceptible to long-term damage from infection, so if 75% of people lose immunity in 38 years, more extensive vaccination schedules are our only hope!
