Geneticist, virologist, cancer biologist, and one of the foremost activists for victims at the outset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic died at age 91 in her home in Kings point, NY.
In the 80s, at the beginning of the outbreak, she was one of the seminal voices that spoke out for the need for research and development of HIV treatment as well as increased protections for HIV positive patients. In addition, she was one of the few activist with the influence, expertise, and access to resources to make a difference for her cause at the highest echelons of the government and the U.S. medical system.
In 1983, she founded the AIDS Medical Foundation for research and lobbying efforts. In part due to her influence as well as the hard fight put up by other organizations such as ACT Up, medical research efforts as well as patient protects came about, though many would say they did not come soon enough.
